Expatriates (in English)

Since my own experience as an expat, my commitment has been to empower expats, so that they can understand and act according to the challenges and changes they experience.

To be an expatriate in Denmark, or anywhere else, means accepting a new culture and a different set of values. It sounds easy, but in reality it can be quite an exhausting experience.

When I was an expat in Nigeria and Egypt I sometimes felt lonely and isolated. At the same time I was wondering how all the other expats were able to have such fabulous lives. As I got more experience I realized that many expats went through the same feelings and experiences as I did. Actually, most of us felt shameful of the fact of loneliness.

Expats in Denmark are having a very tough time understanding the Danish culture and our core values. It is perceived as very difficult to become part of Danish networks and become friends with Danes. I am wondering which initiatives should be taken in order to ease the way into the Danish society. This could also be a parallel discussion on how we welcome all foreigners in Denmark. How do we make people feel welcome and accepted?

Please share you story and experience as an expat or any ideas that can inspire new actions!
